Members of the Health by Design leadership team have significant experience in medical practice, insurance and self-funded benefit administration.
David M. Player, MD – Founder, Chairman and Principal
Health by Design was founded in 1982 by Dr. David M. Player, a San Antonio nephrologist. Dr. Player’s vision was to teach patients a lifestyle of wellness and provide an opportunity to obtain preventive care through trusted physician/patient relationships. Dr. Player received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine and is board certified in Internal Medicine with a sub-specialty in Nephrology. He received his specialty training at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. During his career as a nephrologist, he cared for thousands of patients with diabetes and kidney disease and was involved in the care of nearly 2000 patients with kidney and heart transplants. Dr. Player serves as a medical advisor and personal physician to many high-level corporate executives throughout Texas. He also provides medical consultative services to leading regional and national health insurance companies.
James W. Ogletree, MD – Chief Executive Officer, Medical Director and Principal
Dr. Ogletree joined Health by Design in 1990. Dr. Ogletree is responsible for the supervision of medical personnel and the oversight of Health by Design’s on-site corporate clinics. A graduate of Texas Tech with a degree in microbiology, Dr. Ogletree received his MD at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He is board certified in Family Practice with added qualifications in Sports Medicine. He is responsible for the development of Health by Design’s on-site clinic strategy which incorporates individual wellness assessments, lifestyle and disease management, and episodic care of employees and their family members. Dr. Ogletree has served as a team physician for numerous sports teams and is active in his church.
Barney P. Randol – President, Chief Operating Officer and Principal
Mr. Randol has been a member of Health by Design’s leadership team since 2005. Mr. Randol oversees the administrative and financial areas of Health by Design and is responsible for executing the mission and vision of Doctors Player and Ogletree. A seasoned entrepreneur for over 40 years, Mr. Randol’s prior experience includes owner and partnership roles in retail, property and casualty insurance, banking, and real estate enterprises. In addition, he was the President, CEO and Principal of the largest dental provider network in Texas – Texas Dental Plans. During his active participation on the leadership team, Health by Design has been blessed with 65.2% annualized growth since 2005. Mr. Randol holds positions on numerous community, church, and corporate boards.
